Dear Editor,
Most individuals leave college after four years with a brain full of new information, and a nicely printed piece of paper proving their earned degree. However, even though they may be ready to enter the real world and start looking for a job, many companies are looking for an “it factor.” Chances are, all of the other recent college graduates that are applying for the same job have many similar qualifications such as experience and internships. Yet, there is another option that can truly set a candidate apart from the rest – a degree of higher education. According to Catherine Rampell a reporter from The New York Times, “Going back to school does offer the possibility of joining the labor force…Unemployment rates are also generally lower for people with advanced schooling.” The benefits of graduate school are not just the continuation of learning but it can also give individuals a competition advantage in the work world.
I’d like to propose a feature piece on the benefits of going to graduate school and continuing ones education titled “Why Apply? – The benefits of applying to graduate school instead of gambling in the workforce.” It will be an 800-1000 word article about how a graduate’s degree can give individuals a boast to help overcome the competitive aspects currently found in job markets. I plan to go in depth about the reasons why graduate school is a beneficial decision as well as ways to go to graduate school without it being a complete financial burden. Along with my own research on the subject of graduate schools I plan on interviewing Rowan University communications studies professor Maria Simone and current graduate school student Rebecca Cha.
I am a third year Writing Arts and Communication Studies dual major in the Communications Department at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. My interests include features, fashion, entertainment, reviews and music. My work has appeared in Jersey Girls Magazine online.
Please let me know if this article is of interest to your magazine and contact me if you have any questions or thoughts.
Sincerely,
